Hundreds of millions of people around the world followed the Ballon d'Or ceremony live in 2022, when Alexia Putellas and Karim Benzema won the awards.

According to figures released by France Football and L'Equipe (via Be Soccer), which are part of the group responsible for organising the awards, the event also attracted 61 million responses on Twitter (now X), demonstrating the enduring appeal and prestige of the vote.

World Cup winners Aitana Bonmati, of Spain, and Lionel Messi, the Argentina captain, are the favourites to win their categories this time, when a huge audience is certain to tune in again.

The ceremony, which will be hosted by former Chelsea star Didier Drogba, will take place on October 30 in Paris. The winners of the Kopa Trophy (for best young men's player) and Yashin Trophy (for the best men's goalkeeper) will also be announced.

Lionel Messi is hoping to land a record-extending eighth trophy this year, but the empyrean Argentine faces competition from the likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. Five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo did not receive a nomination, but recent winners Luka Modric and Karim Benzema are in the running.

How are the award winners decided?

The different awards are decided in different ways, with a mix of journalists and ex-players helping to choose the most worthy winners.

Men's Ballon d'Or

A panel of journalists from the top 100 football nations, per the FIFA rankings, vote on the men's Ballon d'Or award. Each nation has one journalist representative who votes on the international ballot.

Women's Ballon d'Or

Like the men's Ballon d'Or award, the Ballon d'Or Feminin is decided by an international panel of journalists. However, it is a panel of 50 - one journalist from each of the top 50 nations.

Kopa Trophy

The winner of the Kopa trophy is decided by a jury of Ballon d'Or winners.

Yashin Trophy

The Yashin Trophy winner is decided in the same way as the men's Ballon d'Or, by a panel of 100 journalists.

The glitzy annual ceremony takes place in Paris this evening, when the Argentine icon is expected to extend his record and claim football's most prestigious individual prize yet again at the Theatre du Chatelet after his World Cup-winning exploits in Qatar last winter.

Even Erling Haaland's remarkable 2022-23 campaign, one that saw him score 52 goals in just 53 matches and fire Manchester City to the Treble, is unlikely to be enough to deny Messi, who is already very much in a league of his own - boasting seven to great rival Cristiano Ronaldo's five - when it comes to the Ballon d'Or.

Six other City players join Haaland on the 30-man shortlist, with Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane the English representation.

The Ballon d'Or Feminin will also be awarded tonight, with Aitana Bonmati believed to be leading the race after a stellar season for Barcelona and Spain.

Alexia Putellas has won the award in each of the last two years, but an ACL injury ended her hopes of making it a hat-trick and she is not on the shortlist this time.

Mary Earps, Millie Bright, Rachel Daly and Georgia Stanway are the four English players nominated, after the Lionesses reached the World Cup final in the summer.

Lionel Messi has been tipped to win a record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or award tonight following his World Cup-winning exploits last year. Erling Haaland is also in with a shout to win the award at the Theatre du Chatelet after winning the treble with Manchester City last term - scoring 52 goals in 53 appearances.

Arsenal stars Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, former Tottenham striker Harry Kane, and Jude Bellingham join Haaland and Messi on the 30-man Ballon d'Or nominees list. Aaron Ramsdale has been nominated for the Yashin Trophy - awarded to the best performing goalkeeper.

It's not just the Ballon d'Or winner being announced by organisers France Football tonight, but the winner of the Ballon d'Or Feminin too. Barcelona and Spain star Aitana Bonmati is the favourite to win the award, while Chelsea's Millie Bright - along with Rachel Daly, Georgia Stanway and Mary Earps - are the English nominees.

Since awards like these tend to reward those who excelled at major international tournaments, Messi is likely the frontrunner for the men's award after finally leading Argentina to World Cup glory in the last year. The same is likely true for Bonmati, who emerged as Spain's star as they lifted their first World Cup title over the summer.

Karim Benzema, who led Real Madrid to the Champions League, LaLiga, Uefa Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup titles, lifted the Ballon d’Or trophy last year while Alexia Putellas won the women’s award for a second consecutive year.

Lionel Messi is the most decorated Ballon d’Or winner with seven triumphs to his name and is the big favourite to be awarded the trophy again this year after his heroics in helping Argentina win the World Cup. Messi faces competition from Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and PSG’s Kylian Mbappe.

Aitana Bonmati is the favourite to succeed Putellas for the Ballon d’Or Feminin after leading Spain to the Women’s World Cup and Barcelona to the Women’s Champions League. Bonmati was named player of the tournament in both the World Cup and Champions League, while Chelsea and Australia star Sam Kerr could place highly.
